This is a gown for a Union officer's wife. It has a high  military-type stand collar, and two piece coat sleeves. The splendid hand-applied gold braid on the sleeves is a beautiful feature. The brass buttons and skirt trim as well as the red tasseled sash gives this taffeta gown a beautiful appearance.

 

The bodice is fully boned. It and the sleeves are fully lined with cotton muslin.

 

There is tiny piping at the top of the collar,  the armholes and shoulder seams.

 

The full skirt is elliptical, and has deep flat, directional pleats  - front and back, and is  attached to the bodice. The hem is faced with cotton.
