Homespun Work Dress
Wine and Gray Striped Homespun Work Dress (Size 12)
The front opening bodice has nine small pewter-type buttons. There is no boning. It is gathered at center front and back, along with the natural cotton muslin lining, then enclosed in a 1 inch band. The two piece coat sleeves are also lined in unbleached muslin.
The skirt has a center front placket and is gauged all around and hand-whipped to the band that the bodice is set into. The skirt measures 42 inches at the center front and 44 inches at the center back. The same muslin faces the skirt hem which is hand sewn. The skirt hem has a 168 inch circumference.
This humble homespun dress is a very comfortable work garment. The lack of boning is somewhat unusual. However, such a garment was simply made for the woman that did physical work on a regular basis, and this would not have been unusual. It has great character and speaks well for the woman who wants to give a good working woman impression.
